They were preferred for bookbinding as the alum treatment rendered them more resistant to atmospheric pollution than tanned skins.\r\n\r\nAlum tawing is an ancient process of treating prepared animal hides with aluminum salts and other materials.  The skins are then left to dry for several weeks to allow the development of stabilization effects.  \r\n\r\nAlum Tawed skins are typically sort and flexible to the touch, and have a high degree of stretch. Our skins are all specially processed for bookbinding purposes and are vegetable tanned and aniline dyed.  \r\n\r\nGoatskins tend to have a more resilient surface than Calfskins, and have a more pronounced texture.  Goatskins textures vary depending on the techniques used by the tannery.  For example, our French Chagreen skins are hand boarded, which creates their distinctive fine crushed pattern.  \r\n \r\nMost skins will require thinning, or paring.
